Four Mallet Technique Exercises

The following exercise is to be done single hand strokes first (RH only then LH only) building from 60bpm-152 bpm. Once your speed and accuracy is developed with single hands, start playing the exercise with both hands an octave apart. Play from the wrist and always check your grip. If you are noticing inconsistencies, slow down and address them! Once mastered in C Major, continue with every other major and minor key.

Next, we have an exercise that alternates each stroke. Play the exercise with the RH, then the entire exercise with the LH. Once mastered, play the same exercise in each major key- minor too if you know what's good for you!

Laterals are incredibly important when developing your technique and accuracy. Start this exercise at 60 bpm and slowly work up the tempo to challenge yourself! Notice the numbers on top of the exercise which refer to the mallet number. The outside mallet on the LH is 1 while the outside mallet on the RH is 4. Remember to complete this exercise in every major and minor key.
