The Basics:
Three Ringed Binder: All band students MUST have a 3-ringed binder with sheet protectors. You will keep all music and all handouts given throughout the season and year. You will be checked to make sure you have YOUR binder will you at each rehearsal. No sharing music. Pro-tip, use the same binder year to year and at the end of your high school career you will have a treasure trove of information.
Instrument Stands: During all rehearsals (indoor), you must use your instrument stand, which will be assigned to you at the beginning of the season. As the season progresses you will use the carriers more and more. If you do not have the correct kind of carrier, let Ms. Mitchell know ASAP so she can get one for you. Mark the correct height of the stand with a small sharpied line to save time in set up. Drums should be at the same height as your carrier would be.
Appearance: All mallets and sticks should be the same brand/model (taped in the same style and color). All logos on heads should be facing the same direction. When setting your instruments down you should set them down together and facing the same angles/formation. The drum line will move as one going from area to area in a uniform fashion to achieve consistency and to show other groups that you mean business.
Marking Time: A metronome will be used during all rehearsals at the beginning of the season to establish internal beat. As the season progresses, the metronome will be used less and less so you do not become dependent on it! Drum lines do not rehearse in a static fashion. Even when you are standing to rehearse, you MUST be marking time. Trust me, this will help in the long run!

1. Be at rehearsals at least ten minutes early to get your equipment and make it to the rehearsal area on time.
2. Each percussionist needs to bring their 3-ringed binder with sheet protectors to each rehearsal.
3. All percussionists are responsible for their music. Looking for lost music wastes rehearsal time- don't be "that guy".
4. Have appropriate sticks and mallets for each rehearsal, taped the correct color.
5. No one plays or carries your equipment but you.
6. Be careful how you set the drums down.
7. Cymbal players should have a towel to lay the cymbals on.
8. Never sit on the drums or cases.
9. Avoid leaning on the keyboards and timpani.
10. Do not ride on the keyboard frames.
11. Covers should always be on the drums during rehearsals.
12. Do not put any decals or stickers on any drum, carrier, case, keyboard, or timpani.
13. Bars on the keyboard should stay covered when out in the sun and not being used; the sun will crack the bars.
14. Do not place anything on the keyboards or timpani. (Happened WAY too much last year)
15. Avoid playing on the floor with the keyboard and timpani mallets. This wears out the mallets and introduces dirt onto the instruments.
16. The equipment is always lined up together when not being worn by the performer.
17. Percussion equipment has a specific place to be stored when not in use, make sure all equipment is put away properly at the end of each rehearsal.
18. All students should understand how to take care of all equipment.
19. Make sure all keyboards and timpani are covered when put away in the percussion room.
20. When moving percussion equipment with wheels, it is best to push the equipment rather than pull it. Pulling can pull the frame apart.
21. Push the keyboards from the end of the frame not in the middle. The end pieces are built sturdier than the center of the keyboard.
22. When you take suspended cymbals off of the stands put the wing back on right away. This keeps cymbal felts and sleeves from falling off of the stand.
23. Tighten all wing nuts on stands when folding them up. This keeps tubes from falling out when picked up.
24. When putting stands away on the shelf, always put them in feet first. This way when looking for a stand you can see what type of stand it is.
25. Avoid taking stands apart and miss-matching parts.
26. Each person is responsible for packing their own equipment on trips; don't forget sticks, mallets, or carriers.
27. When packing for trips have all equipment lined up with your section.
28. Put your carrier on top of your case, this helps in making sure all carriers get loaded.
29. Pit members need to make a list of everything that they play in the show and use this list to help in packing for each trip.
30. Pick up all cases by the handles, not the straps.
31. NEVER ASSUME SOMEONE ELSE PACKED IT!
32. The students must replace drum heads damaged or broken during the course of pep rallies or playing in the stands during a game.
Remember, equipment that is destroyed, lost, or stolen will have to be replaced by the person/people responsible instead of Ms. Mitchell buying something new for the section.
